In Smith County, Texas, people in the jail grow a garden and give all of the produce to the East Texas Food Bank — more than 160,000 pounds by the food bank CEO’s estimate. Garland County, Arkansas’s detention center works with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture and donates produce to a food bank. We ask Randolph County to start an optional jail garden with its Extension office.

When it reaches the goal it’s handed to the officials named above at a public meeting, and their answer is posted online. This is a petition to your elected officials — like the clipboard at the courthouse door. It does not put anything on the ballot; in Arkansas and most states that takes ink signatures from registered voters. Names are never shown publicly.
